As part of a £20 million investment in the customer experience, Newcastle Airport has implemented next generation security technology in its search area two months ahead of the Government’s 1st June deadline.
The new technology allows passengers to leave all electronics and liquids in their hand luggage, providing them with a hassle-free start to their journey.
Nick Jones, CEO of Newcastle Airport said: “Newcastle Airport has been fully compliant with the latest 'next generation' security requirements since Easter 2024, well ahead of the Government’s deadline.
“Teams across the Airport have worked tirelessly over the last four years to ensure the project was delivered on time. We tested the first pieces of equipment in 2020, strengthened our floors in 2021, began redesigning the security search area in a customer and environmentally friendly way in 2022, installed the first staff training lane in early 2023 and the remaining lanes over winter 2023. It has been a very challenging project from the outset, but we are extremely proud of what we have been able to deliver for our passengers.
“We have worked extremely closely with our suppliers to ensure that our passengers continue to have a quick and hassle-free experience through security and have recruited and trained an additional 100 security staff members to help us to deliver this target.
“An amazing 98% of our passengers have been processed through security in 10 minutes or less, and feedback from our passengers who have used the new machines has included ‘world-class’ and ‘even better than Dubai’. We are very much looking forward to welcoming many more passengers through the doors during the upcoming summer season and showcasing our award-winning Airport experience.”
