Newcastle Airport Commences Major Security Development

On 24 October, Newcastle International Airport started work on a major redevelopment of its security area.

The redevelopment will increase the capacity of the area and see new equipment and technology installed to ensure that passengers can continue to pass through the area without delays.

During 2022, 98% of our passengers passed through security in less than 6 minutes. This project will help to ensure the Airport can maintain these queue times into the future.

The project will also see a transformational change to the aesthetics, with new tiled floors, natural finishes to walls and ceilings, enhanced lighting and better heating and ventilation for passenger and staff comfort.

The project will be implemented in two phases to minimise disruption. Phase 1 commenced on Monday 24 October and will be complete ahead of Easter 2023.

The capacity of the area in summer 2023 will ensure the Airport can maintain less than 6 minute queue times before moving onto Phase 2 in winter 2023-24.  The entire project will be completed by Easter 2024.

Nick Jones, Chief Executive of Newcastle International Airport said:

“We are delighted to be starting this exciting security upgrade to enhance the passenger experience at the airport. The project will see a transformational change to the area and enable the team to operate with the latest equipment.  Although a complex project, I am confident that whilst the works are ongoing passengers will still be able to travel swiftly through security and onto their flight.”
