Confined Spaces

Newcastle Airport Fire Academy has been providing fire training for external companies as well as airport staff and business partners for over 20 years. Our experience and expertise means we're able to offer a range of courses to the wider aviation industry.

Low Risk

This confined space course specifically concentrates on low risk shallow entries with adequate ventilation, natural or mechanical, where access is simple and unobstructed and there is no likely risk of flooding. Therefore, it’s for entries no deeper than 3 metres, with an unobstructed vertical lift, a straight ladder into a dark chamber. Delegates will be trained in the use of fall arrest and retrieval equipment should the situation require it and appropriate ladder climbing techniques, which will allow for safe access and egress into a confined space environment. (1 Day)

Medium Risk

This course specifically concentrates on medium risk entries with adequate ventilation, natural or mechanical, where access is simple and unobstructed and there is no likely risk of flooding. Therefore, it’s for entries deeper than 3 metres, with an unobstructed vertical lift, a straight ladder into a dark chamber. Delegates will be shown two methods of entry: staying on lifeline to complete the task, where if they collapsed the retrieval equipment would be operated and removal from the life line in where rescue team would be required. (2 Days)

High Risk

This course is designed to enable a competent person to conduct a risk assessment prior to gaining entry into a confined space, therefore ensuring all specified risks have been identified which will ensure suitable and sufficient control measures have been implemented, allowing the risk to remain as low as reasonably practicable. Where this is not possible entry may be gained using full duration breathing apparatus; this course covers set description and fault finding following a general check, donning and starting procedures, followed by safe doffing procedures upon exiting for hazardous area and air line systems. The course covers a broad range of structures including shafts, vessels, tunnels, voids etc. using a man-riding winch and retrieval device connected to a davit or tripod to gain entry. Rope systems can also be used depending upon the clients requirements. The training is general to working within a confined space and working at height but focus’s very much on the industrial/urban environment. (3 Days)

Emergency Rescue and Recovery

This training course covers how to operate safely as a member of a rescue team who may need to rescue and recover a casualty from a confined space. Open circuit full duration breathing apparatus will be used covering set description and fault finding following a general check, donning and starting procedures, followed by safe doffing procedures upon exiting for hazardous area. A broad range of equipment will be used including stretchers, tripod, winches, O2 therapy and Entonox. The training environment will include shafts, vessels, tunnels, voids etc. using a man-riding winch, rope systems and a retrieval device connected to a davit or tripod to gain entry. The training is general to working within a confined space and working at height but focus’s very much on the industrial/urban environment. (2 Days)

Manager and Supervisors

To impart knowledge and skills to those persons who may be involved in planning, organising and managing work safely in confined spaces. This training programme is designed for those responsible for organising and planning work activities within a confined space. The manager may or may not supervise the actual job. (Emphasis on hazards / controls, use of documents associated with confined space entries, use of environmental monitoring equipment, access equipment, escape breathing apparatus. (1 Day)

Bespoke Combination High Risk and Rescue

This course is designed to enable the rescue of a person within a Confined Space from a broad range of structures including shafts, vessels, Oil platform legs, transition piece, tunnels, and voids using a simple wire system. The training is general to working within a confined space and rescue but focus’s very much on Construction, Renewables, Oil & Gas and the Water Utilities industry. On completion of training those attending should be capable of assessing the risk associated within a confined space on a range of different structures found within industry, be competent in the use of full duration breathing apparatus and escape breathing apparatus and carrying out a rescue using a wire system and SKED stretcher or stretcher appropriate to clients requirements. (2 Days)

Bespoke Emergency Rescue, Recovery and Casualty Management

This course is designed to enable the rescue of a person within a Confined Space from a broad range of structures including shafts, vessels, oil platform legs, transition piece, tunnels, and voids using a simple wire system. The training is general to working within a confined space and rescue but focus’s very much on Construction, Renewables, Oil & Gas and the Water Utilities industry. On completion of training those attending should be capable of assessing the risk associated within a confined space on a range of different structures found within industry, be competent in the use of full duration breathing apparatus and escape breathing apparatus and carrying out a rescue using a haulerbiner, wire system and a SKED, longboard and Telson stretcher or stretcher appropriate to clients requirements. In addition the delegates are introduced to casualty management which will cover areas such as; scene survey, primary and secondary survey, CPR/AED, airway management, cervical collar, oxygen therapy, bleeds, fractures and casualty packaging. (3 Days)
