Iconic views

Get some fresh air and take in stunning views from the 70-foot high Penshaw monument, at the top of Penshaw Hill. The monument, built in 1844, is a half-size replica of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens and can be seen for miles around

Walks

A leisurely stroll, a brisk walk, a ramble or a group hike, there are lots of ways to go walking in Sunderland, with a compact and accessible city centre, acres of parks and green spaces and a beautiful coastline all within easy reach.

Several routes are available throughout Sunderland, including the Active Sunderland 123 walks, which are three routes of varying distances you can walk, jog and run. Take a heritage trail to get active and reconnect with Sunderland’s rich history, taking in some of Sunderland’s most iconic landmarks.

Outdoor activity

Sunderland's award-winning outdoor spaces offer lots to see and do for the whole family. Its stunning coastal scenery provides a wonderful seaside playground for adults and children alike.

Rich in activities, head to Silks worth Ski Slope where you can ski or snowboard all year round on a dry ski slope. Surf, row, kayak, sail and more at the Marine Activities Centre, located on Roker Beach. Here you can explore the beautiful coastline whilst being under guidance from skilled water sport experts.

History

Since the 7th century, when St Peter's Church at Monkweamouth was the home of the Venerable Bede, Sunderland has been world famous for many things - shipbuilding, glass making, coal mining to name a few.
