Loganair to launch air services to Bergen and Guernsey
Loganair has today (September 9) announced it is introducing flights from Newcastle to the Norwegian coastal city of Bergen and the Channel Islands destination, Guernsey – bringing the carrier’s tally of routes at Newcastle Airport up to five in six months.
The Scottish airline is set to commence year-round, four-times weekly services to Bergen on April 27 - a schedule designed to enable overnight business trips, weekends, long-weekend and extended breaks. It is also launching seasonal Saturday flights to Guernsey between May 23 and September 5.
Both routes are operated by a 37-seat Embraer 135 jet aircraft with a flight time of only 95 minutes to Bergen and 90 minutes to the Channel Island.
Bergen is the Gateway to the Fjords and is also a thriving centre of Norway’s energy sector. It plays home to diverse maritime and aquaculture industries – based around one of Europe’s biggest ports, from which the world-famous Hurtigruten voyages around Norway’s coastline also set sail.
The coast city is also a popular tourist destination, steeped in history and surrounded by seven iconic mountains - a bucket-list locations for fans of cultural activities, top-class food and stunning landscapes.
A vibrant city with plenty going on, its famous colourful wooden wharf boasts UNESCO World Heritage Status while fans of the outdoors can make a short trip to enjoy picturesque mountain walks amongst Norway’s towering fjords.
Film fans will be interested to hear it is the setting which inspired the makers of Disney’s hit animation, Frozen, recreating many of its most prominent features.
Meanwhile, weekly Saturday flights to Guernsey will be popular with holidaymakers keen to explore the second largest Channel Island. Blessed with a sunny climate, visitors can explore stunning beaches, military history and quaint villages during a weeklong break.
Across all its routes Loganair provides a complimentary baggage allowance, in-flight refreshments and the option to join Clan Loganair – the airline’s competitive reward programme for frequent flyers. Business customers can also opt for several different fare products, offering a range of flexibility as required.
Kay Ryan, Commercial Director at Loganair said: “We’re delighted to add two more services from Newcastle Airport, significantly strengthening our presence in the North East since entering the market in February.”
“Both these destinations are extremely popular with tourists and Bergen also has strong business connections with the maritime and energy industries in the North East. We’re working on further developments of our services at Newcastle as well and hope to share further exciting news soon.”
Leon McQuaid, Head of Aviation Development at Newcastle International Airport, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with these two new routes. As well as being twinned with Newcastle, Bergen is a UNESCO World Heritage City, the gateway to the breath-taking Fjords of Norway and has strong links with the oil and gas industry.
“Guernsey is a great summer destination with its stunning coastlines and rolling hills making it the perfect getaway for the North East travelling public. We also look forward to promoting the North East to inbound tourists in each of these markets.
“After taking on the Brussels and Stavanger routes earlier in the year, and recently adding Aberdeen to its list of destinations served from Newcastle, Loganair has shown its solid commitment to the North East.”
Nick Forbes, leader of Newcastle City Council said: “It’s great to see these new direct routes coming to Newcastle International Airport.
“Securing a direct route to Newcastle’s twin city of Bergen is particularly good news. Our close links with Bergen and Norway is a source of immense pride, a friendship seen so visibly in the annual Bergen Christmas tree celebration.
“With these new flights to Bergen and Guernsey people across the North East will be able to forge their own unique links to these great destinations.”
Tickets will be on sale from tomorrow with lead-in fares commencing at £74.99 to Guernsey and £89.99 to Bergen, all including a complimentary checked baggage allowance and in-flight refreshments.
