Many destinations now require passengers to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test on arrival. The type of test required varies depending on the destination, however usually it is necessary to take the test at least 48-72 hours before arrival at your destination.

Newcastle Airport is working in collaboration with two local COVID-19 testing companies to provide convenient, efficient and cost-effective pre-departure COVID-19 tests for passengers who require them.

The service and price of your test includes FREE Parking located within the Premium Meet and Greet facility.

 

 

How does the PCR Test process work?

3. Your test is carried out by a qualified clinician and results sent via email within 36-48 hours

Please take special care when booking your test date and time - When selecting your appointment you must ensure you check with your airline and final destination whether your time frame for having a negative COVID-19 result is before your departure date and time or your arrival date and time.

 

How much do the tests cost?

The PCR test costs £110 and results are given within 36-48 hours. 

This includes the test being carried out by a qualified clinician and analysed in a Newcastle based laboratory.

How do I book?

If you require a PCR test, you can make a booking via the NPH website. You will need to choose the date and time of your test to ensure it meets your travel requirements, before making payment online.

If there are several members of your group and you require multiple tests, appointments will need to be booked separately.

How does the process work?

Once your appointment has been booked and you have received your confirmation, simply arrive at the NPH testing facility at Newcastle Airport with your booking confirmation and passport, at least 10 but preferably 15 minutes prior to your appointment.

A trained clinician will carry out your test and you will receive your certificate via your email 36-48 hours after your appointment.

The test will be couriered to our laboratory in Newcastle and you will receive your certificate via your email 36-48 hours after your appointment. The certificate will clearly state your result, and whether you are Fit To Fly or Not Fit To Fly.

When visiting the test centre what can I expect?

Once you have parked and reported to the main entrance door on the north side of the test facility you will be instructed on each step of the journey through the test centre, reporting first to the reception. When instructed, you will be called forward for your test. They will give you some instructions and talk you through the process. When they do the swab, samples will be taken from your throat then your nose. Please avoid eating for an hour or two prior to testing and bring a bottle of water in case you would like a drink after your swab.

How much is a test?

A PCR test is priced at £110.00 per person. This includes the test being carried out by a qualified clinician and analysed in a Newcastle based laboratory. We regret that will not be able to refund a booked appointment if it is within 48 hours of your appointment time.

At the moment we are providing Fit To Fly certificates using the Primer Design Genesig Covid-19 Real Time PCR Assay.

What do I do if I need to change or cancel my appointment?

Please refer to the booking information on the NPH website regarding changing or cancelling your appointment. Please note, you will not be able to obtain a refund within 48 hours of your booked appointment date and time.

Can I not use a test provided by the NHS or as part of the mass testing scheme?

No, the countries require a PCR test and a ‘fit to fly’ certificate which is not possible via the NHS or mass testing schemes.

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes, depending on your test result you will receive a 'Fit to Fly' or 'Not Fit to Fly' certificate via email within 36-48 hours of your test.

Who carries out the testing?

All PCR tests are carried out by a trained NPH clinician and then analysed at MDNA in their Newcastle based laboratory.

What if my test is positive?

If your test result is positive, you must self-isolate in accordance with government guidelines. Unfortunately you will not be permitted to travel therefore you should contact your airline/tour operator to discuss your options.

What if my test is invalid?

In the rare situation that your test is invalid, the sample will be retested. This may cause delay to your result being sent to you and you may not be able to obtain a result within your timeframe.

In most cases you will receive the result after an invalid test has been retested. The incidence of an invalid test is 1:1000. We have reduced the risk of invalid tests and false negatives considerably by providing a face to face testing service which helps to ensure an adequate sample is collected.

In the very rare event of a second invalid test result, it will not be possible issue a result within the remaining time available before your departure and you will not be able to fly. We cannot issue a refund.
