easyJet celebrates 15 years based in Newcastle

easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, has today celebrated the 15th anniversary of its base at Newcastle International Airport.

Celebrations have taken place throughout the day at Newcastle International Airport, including an impressive cake for passengers at the easyJet check-in desk, and party food in the crew room for the pilots and cabin crew who operated the day’s flights.

Some lucky passengers on board the flight to Geneva won fantastic prizes as part of the celebrations, including a voucher for 2 easyJet return flights to anywhere across the network, and an Italian afternoon tea for 2 with prosecco at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel here in Newcastle.

easyJet is proud to be Newcastle’s biggest airline, having flown over 18.6 million passengers since operations started there. With three based aircraft and over 150 staff members, easyJet provides Newcastle passengers with 15 domestic and international routes, including the most popular destination Alicante.

Ali Gayward, easyJet UK country director, commented:

“We are delighted to be celebrating 15 fantastic years of our base at Newcastle International Airport.

“We are proud to be the biggest airline in Newcastle, serving destinations such as Rhodes and Alicante internationally, and domestic routes such as Belfast and Bristol.

“easyJet looks forward to continuing to provide low fares and friendly customer service to our passengers in the North East.”

Nick Jones, Chief Executive Officer at Newcastle International Airport, said:

“Of all our airline partners, easyJet carries the most passengers, taking the North East travelling public to a great range of destinations and we’re delighted to be celebrating this milestone with them today. The commitment shown to the region by the airline is always great, with some fantastic routes and aircraft added over the years – including the recently added state-of-the-art, low-noise and low-emissions A320neo aircraft. We can’t wait to see where the next 15 years will take us.”

Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council and lead of the LA7 shareholders, said:

“Celebrating 15 years of operation for easyJet at Newcastle International Airport is fantastic. The Airport is critical to the North East region as a generator of jobs and millions of pounds for the local economy.

“The partnership between the airline and the Airport is incredibly important when it comes to enhancing our regional connectivity, growing our economy and attracting inward investment. It’s also vital to encouraging tourism in the North East, with the recent promotion of easyJet’s route to the region from Berlin in conjunction with Visit Britain, NewcastleGateshead Initiative and tourism partners across the region helping us to do just that.”
