10-04-2015

Keen walker, Eric Wrightson is taking on the challenge of an 80km walk this weekend as part of the celebrations around Newcastle International Airport’s 80th Anniversary.

Eric, 59 from Consett is General Manager of Park & Fly at the airport and an experienced long distance walker. He will be taking part in The Woldsman 2015 event in East Yorkshire on 11 April with help from colleague and support driver, John Mason.

He’s also raising money for the airport’s adopted charities – Newcastle United Foundation and SAFC’s Foundation of Light. In December 2014 the airport announced a historic partnership, with the foundations jointly becoming the airport's adopted charity for 2015 and 2016. Both charities work with children, young people and families across the North East using the power of football to educate, encourage and inform on a number of areas including health, sport and teamwork.

Eric said: “I'm aiming to walk 80km on 11 April by taking part in The Woldsman 2015. As many of my colleagues, friends and family know I'm an experienced long distance walker and have been taking part in organised walks for over 20 years.

“The challenge this weekend is 80km which is around 50 miles. I'm walking as part of Newcastle International Airport's 80th anniversary celebrations and will be raising money for our adopted charities - Foundation of Light and Newcastle United Foundation. I’ve completed a number of long distance walks in the past and they’re always such a great personal challenge for me. I’m hoping to do this in less than 14 hours so wish me luck!

“I’d like to thank all of my colleagues, friends, family and business partners for their support and their kind donations. Money raised will go to support two very good causes so I’m delighted with the donations received so far.”

Jennifer Rae, Events and Fundraising Coordinator at Newcastle United Foundation, said: “We are delighted that Eric is taking on such a big challenge and raising money for both Newcastle United Foundation and the Foundation of Light. Both Foundations promote health and wellbeing in adults as well as children, and Eric is a great example of this. We are all behind Eric and wish him the best of luck.”

Phil King, Head of Commercial at the Foundation of Light, said: “It is a fantastic effort from Eric to commit to walking 80km this weekend in aid of the two Foundations. We encourage healthy, active lifestyles through everything we do – so Eric is really embodying this as well as raising some vital funds in the process. We all wish him every success with the challenge.”
