Landscape and Wildlife

Newcastle International Airport has developed a Landscape and Wildlife Strategy, which sets out high standards for landscaping schemes and maintenance. The strategy details the criteria required to enhance the landscape value of the airport, while also ensuring that safeguarding, such as bird strike hazards, is upheld.

Any development on site is assessed and the effect on the local environment minimised. As such the site is surrounded by landscaping belts with trees acting as natural barriers to reduce the visual impact of the airport.

The protection of wildlife on site is also very important and the airport is currently working in partnership with the Ponteland Red Squirrels group to monitor squirrel activity on the airport site. This group is carrying out a survey on the airport site recording the presence of red squirrels, as Newcastle Airport is trying to encourage the re-introduction of red squirrels to the site.
