Newcastle Airport has worked extensively to develop a series of designated arrival and departure routes. There are a number of complex issues to consider when designing routes for aircraft to follow, including airspace arrangements, aircraft capabilities and environmental considerations. The routes which are currently operating are believed to be the optimum routes and where possible avoid residential areas.
The majority of aircraft will follow the routes illustrated. Exceptions to these include light aircraft and aircraft operating what is called a ‘visual approach’.
Operationally a number of procedures are in place to minimise noise, such as Continuous Descent Approaches (CDAs), which provide the opportunity for aircraft to land in a more environmentally friendly way.
