Airport Fire Service Training Staff

Tim Oakes 

Tim Oakes brings over 35 years of firefighting experience, including 25 years of fire training at international standards and a host of internationally recognised qualifications. After leaving the RAF, Tim expanded his career in private sector fire training and firefighting, rising to the role of Business Development Manager at the International Fire Training Centre (IFTC) in Teesside, UK. As an Instructor Tim has conducted training needs analysis, training delivery programmes in Europe, Middle East and the Caribbean. He has worked with global airports in development of training facilities including Air-services Australia. Tim has recently been working in Bahrain in delivering training to the Airport Fire Service and assisting in the development of their practical training facilities.

John Purdy 

John has 20 years of service at Newcastle International Airport, all of which have been spent within the Airport Fire Service. Prior to joining Newcastle International Airport John served for 6 years with the Royal Air Force Fire Service. Currently holding the position of Station Manager John is responsible for the marketing, sales and business development & training for the Academy. He continues to be instrumental in the development of assessment methods for CAA approved courses.

Simon Allan 

Simon has been employed at Newcastle International Airport for 23 years. During this period Simon has been detached working in the private jet centre and car parking operations as a Business Development Manager. Returning to the RFFS and resuming his current operational position of a Watch Manager. Simon has worked with the team in a supporting role achieving Approved Training Provider status from the CAA to deliver RFFS mandatory aviation courses and continues to be actively involved in the design, planning and delivery of future courses.

Gary Groves 

Gary has 28 years of Fire Service experience, 6 spent with the RAF the last 22 years at Newcastle Airport Fire Service. During this period Gary has held a supervisory role for 18 years ensuring high standards of training are maintained. He has developed himself gaining qualifications in Aviation Firefighting, Management, C&G Teacher training. Currently holding the position of Crew Manager Gary manages the Fire Service Quality Management System and Health and Safety for the department ensuring legislation compliance and the safety and welfare of all personnel.

Steve Murray 

Steve has 34 years of service at Newcastle International Airport, all of which have been spent within the Airport Fire Service. During this period Steve has also served with Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service as a retained Fire-fighter. Currently holding the position of Station Manager Steve also manages the departments MOC scheme for Managers as well as being instrumental in the development of Virtual Reality training for CAA approved courses.
