The airport at present is working towards creating more sustainable transport for everyone using the airport. In this instance this definition includes all means of transport to the airport other than by sole occupancy private motor vehicle or taxi/private hire vehicles. This therefore includes bus, train, light rail, car share, cycling and walking.
The airport has an established Airport Local Transport Forum with the key objective of drawing up and agreeing challenging short term and long term targets for decreasing the proportion of journeys to the airport by private car, while increasing the share of journeys made by other sustainable modes.
A demand-responsive bus service has also begun in 2002, providing a service route that can be altered according to the location of potential customers. This is a popular service, although as yet has not had time to develop its use among staff or passengers. The service operates at times when normal bus services are not in operation, and thereby can be a useful form of transport for shift workers.
Incentives which will be undertaken include:
- Staff Green travel plan including ticketing initiatives, car share scheme, and demand responsive mini bus provision;
- Provision of facilities to cyclists;
- Improvements to Metro and bus services and facilities, including support for improvements to rail/Metro interchange at Newcastle Central Station;
- Upgrade to Metro and bus facilities at the Airport, after 2006;
- Possible provision of direct mainline rail services to the Airport, after 2011.
